Art-Themed PicCollage Projects

Collage – /kəˈläZH/ – noun – a piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric on to a backing.

Now, we’d update this definition from the Oxford English Dictionary slightly to include “adding adorable stickers and text to make our Insta stories pop…” But we digress. Even if it’s just for fun, collaging is, ultimately, art. So we’ve come up with some art-themed PicCollage projects to help you unleash your inner creative genius.

Explore An Art Museum

Use online tools to “visit” a museum that has been on your list. Peruse the collection and choose a work that really speaks to you. Then use PicCollage to make a collage featuring, or inspired by, your favorite work of art.

We chose the 1870 painting Salomé  by Henri Regnault which caught our eye as we were browsing the art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Study Famous Collage Artists

Study pioneering artists who worked, or currently work, in collage and create something inspired by them. Some examples include Hannah Höch, Alice Walker, Man Ray, Wangechi Mutu, and Joseph Cornell. Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso also dabbled in papiers collés (collages made using only paper).

We loved the bright colors and simple design of Henri Matisse’s The Snail from 1953, so we created our own summery floral version. (Fun fact, this Matisse work is actually pretty huge – over 9′ x 9′!)

Make A Collage Around A Single Word

Choose a word that speaks to you (no pun intended) and create a collage inspired by that word. What feelings does it evoke for you? What colors? What images?

We made a très chic collage inspired by the French capital and all things pink and Parisienne. 

So what are you going to create? Don’t be afraid to have fun with it and take risks. After all, in the words of Bob Ross, one of the great artists of our generation, “We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.” Also, PicCollage has an “Undo” button. 😉
